Basic Vegan Chocolate Cake

photo 3-1   This is a great basic chocolate cake recipe that also happens to be vegan, yes vegan. And...it is delicious! It has a deep chocolatey wonderful flavor with a very nice moist crumb. The traditional basic chocolate cake recipe will be posted later so in the meantime you should probably give this one a try 🙂 The nice thing too is that you most likely have all the ingredients in your cupboard right now, it's just that easy. Not too mention no mixer necessary! This is a hand mix-to cake pan-to oven-to frost-to eat-kind of cake!! So yeah, give it a try and then let us know. Especially you first time vegan chocolate cake people out there! Now if you are like us and go for the impressive three layer cake then 1 1/2 times the recipe and use 3 8 or 9 inch round cake pans. We also double the frosting recipe cause really (?) you can never have enough lovely dense wonderful dark chocolate frosting!  

Vegan Chocolate Frosting



  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup (½ stick) dairy-free soy margarine, softened (we use Earth Balance)
  • ¼ cup plain unsweetened almond milk or soymilk (we use unsweetened vanilla almond milk)
  • ¾ cup unsweetened pure cocoa powder
  • ½ t. vanilla


1. In a medium-large mixing bowl, using an electric hand mixer, cream the powdered sugar with the soy margarine until mixture is thick but well combined. Add the almond milk, cocoa powder and vanilla, and continue to mix until smooth. photo 1-3
